Camille Thiriet

Burgundy has no shortage of celebrated domaines, but the most exciting discoveries are often made one generation before the masses catch on. We recently discovered Domaine Camille Thiriet, a domaine that belongs firmly in that conversation.

Camille Thiriet and her partner, Canadian winemaker Matt Chittick, founded their project in 2016, initially producing just 2,000 bottles in a tiny garage behind Camille’s parents’ property in the village of Comblanchien in Burgundy. The two had met while working at Domaine de Bellene, where Matt was cellar master and Camille worked in sales.

Like all startups, they were humble, but seriously ambition, with a goal to step into the most prestigious  winemaking region in the world and  produce precise, site-driven Burgundy from vineyards they believed had been historically overlooked.

In 2021, Camille and Matt acquired their first estate parcel, a tiny 0.80 hectare in Clos Magny Ithis is roughly 2 acres). The following year, they took over the former Domaine Gilles Jourdan in Corgoloin, adding approximately five more hectares of vines. Today, they farm nearly six hectares, primarily in Corgoloin and Comblanchien at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits.

Camille Thiriet is not built around a collection of Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyard sites. It is about them identifying standout terroirs beyond Burgundy’s most famous vineyards.  

The villages Corgoloin and Comblanchien sit between the Corton hill and Nuits-Saint-Georges, forming the core of the Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation. Although these vineyards do not carry Premier Cru or Grand Cru status, they occupy the same broader limestone escarpment that runs through the Côte d’Or.

The hillsides here are cut into extremely hard Bathonian limestone. Depending on the position of the vineyard, the vines encounter shallow rocky soils, sandy clay, deeper clay-limestone deposits and occasional pockets of unusual marl. These differences allow Camille and Matt to produce distinctly different wines from parcels located only short distances apart.

This is where some of Burgundy’s most compelling values can still be found: old vines, individual vineyard expressions and serious farming without the price attached to a  classified cru.

The comparison is not that these vineyards are secretly Grand Crus. Rather, Camille Thiriet is doing what many of Burgundy’s most successful modern growers have done, she is recognizing the potential of less fashionable appellations and treating each parcel with the same precision normally reserved for more prestigious sites.

Everything is produced on a deliberately small scale. Fermentations rely on native yeasts, extraction is gentle, and pump-overs are performed by gravity or bucket. Depending on the vineyard and vintage, Camille incorporates meaningful percentages of whole clusters, with some wines fermented entirely as whole bunches. The wines are pressed in a small wooden basket press, oak is used with restraint and sulfur is generally added only at bottling. The objective is to preserve the aromatics, textures and individual personality of each vineyard. 

The 2024 collection from Camille includes wines from ancient-vine Aligoté and Bourgogne to Camille and Matt’s increasingly important estate Lieux Dits in Corgoloin. These wines demonstrate that some of Burgundy’s most exciting opportunities are no longer found by simply chasing famous village names, but by exposing these micro-terroirs from off the beaten paths in old vines, overlooked hillsides and with growers willing to treat a Bourgogne or Côte de Nuits-Villages parcel with the same cre and attention as the big names. 

With vines reaching 60, 90 and even more than 100 years old, diverse limestone-based soils and tiny production, Camille Thiriet should be one of the  most closely watched young estates in Burgundy.

2024 Domaine Camille Thiriet Aligoté “Du Jardin”

Du Jardin is assembled from three parcels of Aligoté Doré: one near Pommard, the tiny Le Jardin parcel in Corgoloin and Les Basses Gouttes in Meursault, where the vines are more than 100 years old. Yields from these ancient vines are naturally small, contributing considerably more aromatic intensity and texture than one would normally expect from Bourgogne Aligoté. A small portion receives brief skin contact, adding subtle grip and dimension, before the wine is raised primarily in used barrels. This is serious Aligoté: vibrant and mineral, but with the concentration, texture and length of old vines.

En la Place comes from the La Sablière vineyard between Corgoloin and Comblanchien. The vineyard’s name references its sandy soils, and the parcel combines light sandy clay with vines approximately 90 years old—some potentially older. The sandy component helps give the wine its lifted perfume, while the age of the vines supplies concentration and depth. Small berries and partial whole-cluster fermentation produce an unusually refined Bourgogne Rouge, with vivid red fruit, floral aromas and a delicate, lacy structure. This is the most approachable introduction to the domaine, but the old-vine material places it well beyond ordinary regional Burgundy.

Les Chagniots comes from approximately 60-year-old vines in Corgoloin, just south of Clos des Langres. The parcel lies on a slope with thicker clay and soils believed to contain a meaningful proportion of iron oxide, potentially explaining both its name and its darker, more structured personality. Compared with En la Place, Les Chagniots is deeper and firmer, with more pronounced tannin, dark cherry fruit, spice and a distinctly savory mineral character.

Cuvée Confidentielle began as one of Camille and Matt’s original micro-négoce wines, named for the confidentially small quantity they could produce in their garage. For recent vintages, the Chardonnay has come from a trusted grower in Mâcon-Cruzille, one of the northern Mâconnais’ most distinctive villages. The vines reach approximately 100 years of age and grow in rocky soils that combine natural ripeness with strong acidity. The result is a Chardonnay with real weight and texture, but also brightness, energy and a long, mineral finish. It delivers considerably more character than the simple Bourgogne designation suggests.

Cuvée Deslandes brings together complementary parcels from Corgoloin and Comblanchien. The principal component has historically come from Le Creux de Sabon, high on the slope of Comblanchien, from Pinot Noir vines approaching 90 years old. The cuvée is named in honor of an early supporter of the domaine. Whole-cluster fermentation and long, gentle infusion preserve the delicate floral and spicy character of the fruit, while a portion of the wine may be raised in stainless steel to retain freshness and aromatic clarity.  This is an especially compelling introduction to Côte de Nuits-Villages: perfumed and vibrant, but underpinned by the concentration of very old vines.

Aux Montagnes comes from a roughly 50-year-old parcel in Comblanchien, directly in front of Camille’s parents’ property. It has been part of the Thiriet range since the domaine’s inaugural vintage. The vines grow in clay-limestone soils with only a shallow layer of topsoil before the limestone beneath. This combination naturally restricts vigor and gives the wine a more compact, mineral structure. The fruit is generally fermented with a modest proportion of whole clusters and the wine is bottled without filtration. Aux Montagnes is darker and more structured than the Bourgogne bottlings, with black cherry, savory spice and firm limestone-driven tension.

La Montagne Blanc comes from a high-elevation limestone site in Corgoloin. The vines were planted with sélection massale material originating from Corton-Charlemagne, although the wine itself is classified as Côte de Nuits-Villages and should not be confused with wine from the Grand Cru. Sources differ on the precise age of the current plantings, but the defining feature of the site is clear: an elevated parcel with extremely thin topsoil over limestone. The domaine’s technical material also describes a tiny production of approximately three barrels.  This is a rare Côte de Nuits white with citrus and orchard fruit, subtle richness and a strong saline, stony finish.

La Montagne is an estate-owned parcel on the southern side of Corgoloin, near the border with Ladoix. It sits at approximately 280 meters of elevation, directly below Clos Magny, and faces due east. The roughly 60-year-old vines grow in light, sandy clay over limestone. Compared with the deeper clay soils found lower on the slope, this site produces a more lifted and perfumed Pinot Noir, while the Côte de Nuits location gives the wine enough depth and structure to develop in bottle. Camille has described the vineyard as combining something of Savigny-lès-Beaune’s freshness and purity with the additional depth and structure of the Côte de Nuits.

 

2024 Domaine Camille Thiriet Côte de Nuits-Villages “Clos Magny”

Clos Magny was Camille and Matt’s first estate-vineyard acquisition and remains one of the defining wines of the domaine. Their 0.80-hectare parcel sits at the top of the larger Clos Magny climat, approximately 350 meters above sea level and directly above La Montagne. The vineyard is surrounded in part by forest, creating a cooler environment that can be particularly valuable in warmer vintages. The site contains several distinct soil formations. Some sections resemble the sandy-clay soils of La Montagne, while others sit almost directly on hard limestone. Higher portions contain somewhat more clay. Large limestone boulders run immediately beneath the surface, producing small berries and loose clusters that permit Camille to ferment the wine with 100% whole bunches. Clos Magny combines the perfume and delicacy associated with its high elevation with considerably greater depth, intensity and structure. It is the most complete and cellar-worthy red in this offer.
