98 Pts JD: “A wine inspired by older vintages that spent an incredibly long time in barrel (sometimes up to 7 to 8 years), the NV (blend of 2007, 2011, and 2015 vintages) Sierra Cantabria CVC 4th Edition / 150th Aniversario is 100% Tempranillo that was aged for 90 months before being bottled in June 2022. Red and black currants, vanilla oak, incense, lead pencil, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it's a rich, medium to full- bodied, concentrated wine with no shortage of tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. It's going to age for 50 years or more.”
The Eguren family dreamt up Sierra Cantabria CVC in 2005 when they were impacted by a bottle of spectacular Rioja from the 1925 vintage. They were startled by the wines youth, intensity, and complexity even after 80 years in bottle. They learned that the particular wine in question had been aged for up to 15 years in barrel (a percentage new), and they set out to produce their own long lasting Rioja. Each release of CVC is a blend of three separate vintages.
They chose a large old vineyard, which is quite exposed to the North, to provide the coolness and acidity that are indispensable for a long ageing process and an intense life. Sierra Cantabria CVC originates from the 1.49 hectare San Pelayo estate situated in San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
Destemmed by hand, berry by berry, with a rigorous selection of every grape. Extended maceration in 1,000L French oak vats that lasts between 25-30 days. MLF in new French barrique. Each vintage ages separately for an average of 84 months (7 years) in new French barrique. The blend is assembled before bottling.
