Under a mountain, Tenuta di Trinoro is an estate with different soils. Some plantings are over 25 years old. Having developed large root systems, they now translate the soils’ distinct tastes. After observing certain grapes coming to the winery with different flavors over so many harvests, we decided to bottle 3 parcels of vineyards separately, under their own labels.
Campo di Camagi (100% Cabernet Franc) is a 1.5-hectare vineyard where vines have grown on broken quartz and limestone, long before we planted: densely, in a thin layer of soil, at 550 meters above sea level. The plants struggled for room until they reached a balance: roots having filled the ground, each vine has the same number of leaves in its share of the air.
Decanter, 96 points: “The final wine in Trinoro’s trio of I Campi Cabernet Francs, Camagi is the highest site at 550m, and this shows in its finesse in this hot and dry vintage. Sous bois, black and blue berries, petrichor, and some minty, balsamic wafts make for an enticing aroma. In the mouth it combines intense, vibrant and succulent dark fruits with fine, grippy tannins and bright, well integrated acidity. There’s an almost-ferrous and incredibly sapid character on the mid-palate, while the finish is precise, fresh and vertical, prolonged by that lovely acidity along with some herbal and balsamic notes. Great poise: a fine Cabernet Franc indeed.
Vinous, 98 points: “The 2021 Campo di Camagi screams with cabernet Franc character. Oh my. Espresso, dried cherry, cinnamon, blood orange, dried herbs and chocolate soar out of the glass. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin frame it all together beautifully. Thin quartz and limestone soils on clay in this parcel seem to exalt aromatic intensity.
