Oddero

Oddero's Wines are a Pillar of Barolo Tradition

Poderi e Cantine Oddero is one of Barolo’s founding families. An estate whose roots in the sandy soils of La Morra stretch back to the 1700s, and whose first bottle of Barolo appeared in 1878. For more than six generations, the Oddero name has stood for authenticity, heritage, and wines of profound classical beauty.

Their vineyard holdings include an extraordinary, star-studded collection of crus—Bussia, Brunate, Vignarionda, Villero, Rocche di Castiglione, Monvigliero, Gallina, and Nizza—sites that define the very essence of the Langhe. From these vineyards come wines of depth, structure, and quiet power, wines that age gracefully for decades and are unmistakably true to their origins.

Much of the estate’s identity stems from Giacomo Oddero, the family visionary who not only elevated his own wines but helped write the DOC and DOCG regulations that protect Barolo and its traditions. His belief in these soils greatness led him to secure some of the region’s most prized vineyards just as others were abandoning them for industrial jobs—a decision that today seems almost prophetic.

Few estates capture the soul of Piedmont with such authority—these are benchmark wines from one of Italy’s truly great families.

The Style of Oddero’s Wines

Oddero’s wines embody the classical soul of Barolo.  They are refined, structured, and profoundly tied to La Morra--the Barolo commune that unmistakably displays wines of perfumed aromatics and combine elegance with power. They are unapologetically traditional in form, yet never rustic or severe. Long macerations, native fermentations, and aging in large Slavonian and Austrian oak botti preserve the clarity of Nebbiolo’s fruit and the nuance of each cru.

The result is a collection of wines defined by transparency, energy, and longevity. Barolos from crus like Brunate, Vignarionda, and Rocche di Castiglione reveal delicate aromatics—rose, tar, and spice—woven around a firm mineral core. They are built for the cellar, where time softens their youthful tension into harmonious wines.

Outside Barolo, Oddero’s Barbaresco from the Gallina cru carries the same precision and depth. Each bottle reflects the family’s quiet confidence: pure, site-driven wines of timeless elegance that speak fluently of the Langhe.

The 2021 Vintage

Just like many other parts of Europe, the 2021 vintage in Barolo marks a return to Barolo of yesteryear after several warm vintages—a growing season defined by balance, purity, and precision, qualities that play directly into Oddero’s traditional style. A cool spring and mild summer preserved freshness and aromatics, while a long, even ripening period allowed Nebbiolo to reach full phenolic maturity without excess alcohol. At Oddero, the vintage accentuates everything that defines the estate: lifted red fruit, fine tannins, and a deep mineral thread that runs through their crus. The wines show remarkable tension and detail—Vignarionda and Rocche di Castiglione are particularly poised and linear, while Bussia is deep and savory. Across the range, 2021 delivers wines that feel both classical and alive, built for aging yet graceful even in youth—a perfect expression of Oddero’s restraint and the enduring elegance of traditional Barolo.

The 2019 Vintage

The 2019 vintage in Barolo is widely regarded as one of the great modern classics—a year of purity, harmony, and striking aromatic clarity.  For Oddero, whose style leans on restraint and transparency, 2019 was an ideal canvas: the wines show brilliant precision and lift, with vibrant red fruit, rose petal, and subtle spice layered over finely etched tannins. Their crus express site with remarkable fidelity—the 2019 Vignarionda exudes depth and power with iron and tar tones; the 2019 Riserva Bussia Mondoca is sourced from the estate’s own 1.1 ha parcel in the “Bussia” cru of Monforte d’Alba, south/south-west exposure, white sandy-poor soils, gives the wine bright energy and tension. The hallmark of Oddero’s 2019s is their quiet confidence, they produced wines of depth that capture Barolo’s character without force, which will continue to evolve gracefully over decades.
