Nicolas Jacob
We have a very small allocation of one of our most allocated Jura producers available right now. Nicolas Jacob. These wines are rarely seen outside of France, and certainly unicorns here in the states. We are one of the only shops in the US to get these wines.
An extremely rare drop of young Jura Superstar Nicolas Jacob is here. Nicolas, born and raised in the Jura, studied and mentored under Domaine Macle and Francois Ganevat, where he became Francois lead winemaker. He then, in a stroke of luck, purchased a tiny 2 acre parcel of vines in the hallowed terroir or L'Etoile. He later was able to purchase a small winery along with another 5 hectares in the village of Cesancey, where he makes his wines in the cellar under his home and has converted all of his vines to organic and biodynamic principles . Nicolas has, in just his 5th vintage release, made a name for himself as one of the rising stars of the region. His attention to detail, vinifying all of his small plots separately, before toiling over final blends to make his wines complete. He has become a master in Elevage.
Today we have a whopping 5 wines to offer, including MAGNUMS (just 1 of each). 2023 represents Jacob's first "normal" vintage--where he was not fighting frost and losing his fruit. While Jacob's wines like some time in bottle, his 2023s are utterly delicious and compelling right out of the gate.
A Jura Poulsard called "Les Chazaux" which comes from Nicolas' own small .6 hectare parcel of Poulsard vines.
His 100% chardonnay "Argales" from Chazaux, a wine we have not seen in a few vintages. "Argale" is a local term for a ne'er-do-well, someone who is good for nothing and constantly strays from the right path. It's usually used endearingly, and has a comical implication. Nicolas uses it for barrels that give him trouble at first. In this case, the wines refused to ferment to dry until the addition of skins from the '21 harvest. Bottled 22 months later, unfined, unfiltered, no sO2
A first time receiving his Pinot Noir. This new bottling of Pinot Noir called "Au Mouiller" comes from two new-ish tiny estate parcels of Jacob in Augea, acquired in 2019, based on soils of marl and limestone dating from the Lower Jurassic period. The Pinot vines were planted in 2000. Jacob does this Pinot with whole-cluster maceration but no further extraction.
Finally, we have one magnum of each his "Les Chazaux" Poulsard, and his Gamay "G". Nicolas chose in this year to purchase a small lot of Gamay from a friend and fellow organic viticultor in the southern Beaujolais. The Gamay was made with three weeks of semi-carbonic maceration, followed by 18 months élévage in 600L barrels
All of Nicolas' wines are Biodynamic, with the exception of the Gamay, which is Organic.
These are a rare site that I know our Jura & natural wine lovers out there will appreciate. Just a few bottles of each, first come first served, so jump on them if you want them.
