Domaine Y Clerget

Domaine Y Clerget

Thibaud Clerget is the 28th generation of his family to make wines in Volnay and Pommard. No, that is not a typo; the Clerget family has been in Burgundy since 1268! Once they began recording land sales in Burgundy. Clerget's first documented purchase was in 1936, when the family acquired the prized Clos du Verseuil 1er Cru vineyard in Volnay as a Monopole.

And yet,  the story of Domaine Yvon Clerget is one of rebirth. In 2009, Thibaud’s father Yvon decided to retire from winemaking. Knowing his son had an intense passion to continue the family legacy, he made the decision to temporarily stop making wine, and instead sell the grapes from the family holdings in the finest terroirs of Volnay and Pommard to Henri Boillot while his son, Thibaud, came of age. During this time, Thibaud began studying vineyard management and winemaking from two storied names in Burgundy--Henri Boillot and Domaine Hudelot-Noellat. After this three year apprenticeship, Thibaud returned to take over the family domaine. In 2015 he produced his first wines and announced the re-emergence of Domaine Yvon Clerget.

We offered Yvon's first vintage at the helm back in 2017 with the release of the 2015 vintage, and since then, it has been almost impossible to get the wines. Today, we have an offer spanning multiple vintages back to 2018 among the Domaine's best holdings. We loved the wines back then, although quite flashy, they were polished and exuberant despite the string of powerful and hot growing seasons winemakers had to deal with, Clerget still harnessed that Burgundian soul.  Critics saw a star in the making, if not already. Fast forward to 2025, and Thibaud Clerget has arrived, just as suspected.

Last week, we were able to drink a bottle of his 2022 Volnay, and it is clear that Thibault has developed a deft hand at creating outstanding Burgundy.  It was a joyous and energetic, an absolutely charming bottle showing sappy dark fred fruits, vivid raspberry, red currants, soft purple flowers, a long, very polished finish.  One of my favorite things about it was how accessible it was now. So drinkable and enjoyable out of the gate, unlike other burgundies that can be disjointed, sleepy, or shut down in their youth. The Volnay was a stunner, I can only imagine how the cru and lieu dits are drinking.

Today we offer a smattering of wines spanning multiple vintages, and we even have some magnums.  The volnay AC is the most available, and I suggest you grab some.  The others, such as those from his prized Rugiens, Clos du Verseuil Monopole, Santenots, and Sous La Chapelle 1er crus in 750s and magnums there are just bottles available.

These wines are extremely limited we have a very small allocation.
