The Hofberg is an historic Grand Cru for both Pinot and Riesling, abandoned after the 60’s as too steep and expensive to work, revitalized later by AJ Adam and others. Facing south in a side valley on the river Dhron, a tributary to the Mosel a few kilometers upstream from Piesport, it's a cool and rocky site full of grey/blue slate. But its salient characteristic is the lattice of iron oxide streaks that run through it, tinting the hillside a rust color and imparting spicy notes to the wines, as iron-rich soils do. Several laudable winemakers pull fruit from there, including AJ Adam, Grans-Fassian, Staffelter Hof, Daniel Twardowski, Loersch, and Steinmetz.
Feels lovely, balanced and fruity, but with a boomerang mineral finish that announces its A+ provenance. To make a wine with this much energy, precision, and deftness of touch in the warm 2022 vintage is a testament to Stefan's mastery as a winemaker.
