For centuries, the ancient ‘Camp Fortet’ (small fort) with its modest profile has overlooked the historic town of Saint-Émilion, peacefully surveying it in times of prosperity, protecting it in times of war. The 20-hectare vineyard forms a single plot, planted upon the highest slopes of Western Saint-Émilion. Constructed from the very rock upon which it stands, the chateau and its surrounding wall (hence ‘clos’) are intimate and unassuming. Ever since the beginning of the classification in 1956, Clos Fourtet has been a member of the elite ‘Premiers Grands Crus Classés’ of Saint-Émilion.
Philippe Cuvelier acquired Clos Fourtet in 2001. He entrusts the running of the estate to his son Matthieu. Together they invest and oversee thoughtful and progressive change, constantly striving for excellence. Passionate about the land, they choose to use organic and biodynamic treatment methods in the vineyard. The estate is looked after with care and love, for it is a jewel that will eventually be passed down to future generations.
The vines of Château Les Grandes Murailles, the smallest classified vineyard in Saint-Emilion, lie adjacent to Clos Fourtet and have belonged to the Cuvelier family since 2013. This vineyard follows the acquisition of Château Poujeaux in 2008 and Château Côte de Baleau in 2013. Together, Clos Fourtet and the imposing Grande Muraille are an iconic symbol of Saint-Émilion. Once a magnificent 13th Century Dominican monastery, the building was raised to the ground by soldiers during the Hundred Years' War, driving the monks who inhabited it to find safety within the walls of the town. A single grand facade remains, towering above a sea of vines.
