Our Best Kept Burgundian Secret: 2018 Didier Fornerol Burgundies!

Posted by Mark Grimaldi on Jul 12th 2020

We have a very strong following for these Burgundies. If you've been on our list for a few years, you are already in the know, as we discovered these and brought them to your attention about 5 years ago now. If you're new to the wines of Fornerol, please see below for a little background on this domain that we've been championing. It seems we are not alone anymore in knowing about this domain, as the wines are more allocated than ever, meaning our allocation is minuscule!

The wines arrive to the U.S. the 3rd week of July, and we will ship after that, weather permitting.
Our offerings on Didier Fornerol's wines have been some of the most popular Burgundy offers we've done, and many who bought the wines came back asking for more after trying them, only to be told we were sold out. As with those years, it's the same story, it's a small domain, so there's not a lot of wine to be had. This year we've got some wine, but as usual, speak now or forever hold your peace! And all orders will be confirmed within 48 hours.

This is the fifth vintage of Fornerol to really even be in the US. It comes in through famed somm and Burgundy Importer Daniel Johnnes, who imports top producers like Dominique Lafon, Roulot, Roumier, Pierre Yves Colin Morey, and many more. Daniel knows his burgundy, to say the least.

A little backstory: Didier only has about 14 acres of vines to work within Burgundy, and he makes mostly Pinot Noir, with a little Chardonnay and Aligote. His Pinots are based on three different Burgundy appellations--Bourgogne Rouge/Blanc/Aligote, Hautes Cotes de Nuits, and Cotes de Nuits Villages. Why should we care about his wines? Well, if you know Burgundy a bit, Didier worked alongside the famous Vigneron Jean Pierre de Smit of the legendary Domaine de l'Arlot in Nuits St Georges. In fact, Didier had been the vineyard manager and cellar master of l'Arlot since 1982. Which might explain his love of whole cluster fermentation pinot noir. In 1999, Didier went back to his hometown after his father's retirement and took over his family's vineyard and winery. Who did he get to work alongside him at his family's domain? None other than Jean Pierre de Smit of Domaine de l'Arlot.

Didier does not own any Cru vineyards, instead, he works his 6 hectares of organically farmed vines that fall under the appellations I listed above. These are real, old school burgundies. Rustic, pure, hauntingly aromatic with supple but balanced fruit, mingled with loamy, earthy notes, baking spice, and savory qualities. They can be drunk young or cellared. These are burgundies for lovers of true Burgundy. Certainly one of my favorite producer discoveries ever.

Burgundy at this quality and at these prices is really a thing of the past.

Wines are very limited, we have 12 bottles of each.
