Back Up the Truck Reds!
The two wines on offer today share only one thing in common- amazing wines for the money that we have carried for multiple vintages. These are workhorse wines for us that we put in the hands of every customer that walks into the shop. They become house wines for many, and they return for these bottles all of the time.Stylistically, they are very different.
One is from the southern Rhone Valley in France, made by the Chaussy family of Mas de Boislauzan, a hyper old school producer of Chateauneuf du Pape wines who has been in existence for 6 generations, holding vines that are upwards of 100 years old. This little wine form their estate is an absolute bonkers value. We have been working with this wine for 3 vintages now, and it just keeps getting better and better. This vintage is giving us major baby Chateauneuf vibes. If you recall our offer last year on the amazing Cotes du Rhone of Brun Avril, this is right up there with that wines style. Ethereal aromas, dark red and black fruits, sappy and ripe but certainly not cloying in the least. There vibrancy and structure, minerality, and taught but gentle tannins. Amazing balance for this warm, southern region, with freshness and verve balancing the big fruit that come along with Grenache/Syrah blends. It's just the perfect red wine, and it is certified organic to boot.
The other is from Salento in Puglia--the heel of Italy's "boot". This wine we have carried since the 2005 vintage, and here we are, 12 years later, offering the 2017. Yes, this is a 2017 vintage, the current release, PERFECTLY aged at the winery until its release this this month. It has been an absolute workhorse wine that has given so much pleasure to wine lovers for so many years. It's just absolutely dripping with Italian terroir, and is one of the most aromatically complex wines we have come across for the price. Along with its ruby red color and gobs of beautiful deep red fruits, it is layered with haunting aromas that only the Italians can do. Dusty, dried cherry, pipe tobacco, leather, these are the characteristics that wines 10 times its price point fail to achieve. It is really just something you need to try for yourself. Put this in any other star-studded more famous appellation in Italy and it literally would be 5 times the price at least. Alas, this "lowly" wine is from a cooperative in Puglia that has been making wines from 300 independent grower's vines since 1935. An absolute steal.
These two wines are two of the most exciting values we carry, and with so many vintages passing through this shop, they have proven to us that they belong in everyone's glass on everyone's dinner table all year long!
