Barbera finds a particularly appealing expression at Sandri, as Elio’s restrained touch tempers its
occasional tendency toward high-octane opulence while fully harnessing the red-fruited
exuberance the variety at its best so satisfyingly embodies. From plantings on hillsides of Cascina
Disa less favorably exposed for Nebbiolo, the Barbera d’Alba Superiore spends 12 months aging
in large Slavonian botti after a natural fermentation in cement, with neither fining nor filtration
employed, and a modicum of sulfur added only at the moment of bottling.
