"Barba" is a local uncle (barba in dialect)-style wine, made with finesse, of red grape varieties cofermented in steel tanks from a single vineyard in the Piemontese foothills of the French Alps. They harvest happens all at once come una volta. Since both Barbera and Chatus mature at slightly different times, this creates a slight rustic character of the wine that works well with... well... rustic plates from the region; agnolotti, aged goat cheeses, grilled goat meats, Tajarin with porcini, and the list goes on. We are all accustomed to seeing Barbera in Piemonte, but the mystery of who planted the Ardéchois vines of Chatus 70+ years ago that go into this wine, has yet to be solved.
The 3 caballeros of Braccia Rese all have roots in their pre-alpine town of Busca near the Piemontese - French border, and all knew each other from the local music scene, but never imagined they'd all be making wine together one day back home.
Livio, after graduating in enology and making wine in Australia and Langhe, returned to Busca in 2019 because of a proposal from his friend Giovanni to make wine with the grapes from his grandparents vineyards. Lucky for Livio, they were stocked with 70-year-old vines bearing autochthonous grape varieties like Neretto Cuneese, Quagliano, and of course Barbera and Merlot. Their friend Elia who was working in Torino as a graphic designer moved to a nearby village in the alps and became the third partner in Braccia Rese. They all 3 participate equally in the vineyard and cellar labor but all three manage the company together in unique ways.
Both Livio and Elia started to make ciders together with Livio's brother, Nicolo, in 2015, and is now a side project called "Sidreria C&L" that also operates out of the Braccia Rese cellar. The following vintages coming to the USA will include 2 new sparkling ciders: one apple cider co-fermented with Quagliano grapes, and one blend of apples with foraged plums.
